She's arrived ! Laurie Meg was born on 5th August 2004, weighing 8lbs 90z. She is serenely beautiful.
Here are the yarns I have started with - luscious baby colours, double knitting yarn, all acrylic (I'll survive), just in case baby reacts to other fibres. Later on I shall do some in cotton, and maybe wool.
Erika Knight's beautiful book 'Simple Knits for Cherished Babies' has some adorable patterns in it (they are all adorable!) and I have taken my lead from there, starting with the double knit stocking stitch sweater and garter stitch jacket. And a blanket, of course, in the Vivian Hoxbro style, alternating squares of different colours. The first jacket and shorts were made in the speckled lemon yarn, which will interact well with apricot and mint. I followed the pattern on only a few items: the garter stitch jacket has acquired long sleeves instead of the 3/4 sleeves in the pattern, and the shorts were adapted from the leggings. The T-shirts have been adapted from a pattern for a long-sleeved jumper, and made a size smaller. And here are the outfits I just love the shaping on these shorts. Short rows give the back ample space for a nappy. The jacket is unbelievably cozy in garter stitch. The little T-shirts are fastened with ribbon at the back. Melt your heart!
The lemon squares are exactly the same colour as the little clothes above - and the clothes picture is more faithful to the real colour. The design is Vivian Hoxbro and I love the way the structural elements vie with the colours for attention.
Here is the lemon ensemble again, on a sunny day. This pici and the one below shows the apple green cotton rude boy trousers outfit. The pullover is a simple T-shape and has buttons on the shoulder and the trousers have the same delightful shaping as the ones above. All 4ply, so I adapted the nappy-sag shaping from the double-knit ones above.![]() This is from Melanie Falick's book, and I couldn't resist one in soft, soft cotton.![]() |
