30th May 2003 evening
Massage was heavenly... I'll be one of her regular devotees from now. Have started a little sock for me, in a sort of greyish green yarn. the colour was not terribly inspiring, but I made up a ruffly textured pattern for the ankle and it looks really good now. I have plans for a pair of 'dress' socks in black with mohair rollover top, then a crisp cotton or viscose in this ruffly pattern and smooth soles, insteps and toes. I will then hang a pearl from underneath the outside rollover of each sock. To be worn with shorter formal cut trousers in black with the V cut in the outside bottom leg, and flat just-lower-than-ankle-boots also in black. (As opposed to the black mini-skirt with high heels and body piercing, and studded dog collars for necklace and bracelet, which also came to mind early this morning. Sort of chic post punk). I have someone in mind whom this would suit immensely.

27th May 2003 evening
No decisions have been made, mainly because I have been totally sidetracked by Sally Melville's Book 1: The Knit Stitch. I want to knit 'Einstein' (Emma has already, with luscious yarn and flaring on the 'skirt'), but also 'Sally's favourite summer sweater' in both long and evening short versions, the 'lots of choices top' with buttons front and back and the 'knit down made to measure jumper'. Oh yes, and the bag. Hmmm. This means yarn purchasing, but I've already spent rather a lot on massage training this quarter. Good thing that pays for itself!

Talking of massage training, I have booked myself in (long overdue) for a massage with one of the trainers from this last weekend. I may die and go to heaven, so if you don't hear anything from me for a while, it's just because I'm trying to get off her table. When did you last have a massage?

I've just ordered a whole load of yarn from Ozeyarn - purple alpaca just because it's beautiful and delicious colours in breeze for the Anjuli jacket in Jo Sharp's Rudgyard Story. Yippee! That just leaves a small yarn purchase or two necessary for the Sally Melville extravaganzas. Did I say I was going to the Lewes needlework show on Saturday?

26th May 2003 evening
Second sock is now finished. That went really quickly, particularly as I spent the whole weekend on an advanced massage course, which was fantastic. Two tutors, one from Liverpool, one from New York, met in NY and are teaching and practising over here. Bliss.

I have finally managed to figure out the principles behind grafting. It's absurdly simple when you work out the architecture of stocking stitch. I'm well chuffed! Now, onwards with stripy 'Spice', another pair of socks (this time two on two circulars at the same time) or swatch around for a jacket?

23rd May 2003 evening
Is anyone else going to the 'Needlework Festival' Lewes Town Hall, 30th and 31st May? Sue from Kangaroo will be there, and I've been trying to persuade her to get hold of Addi turbos... Any luck yet, Sue? I also need some good 4ply / sock weight or fine double knit for at least one of the Jean Frost jackets.

22nd May 2003 evening
Vic, the village electrician has been and left in a state of high excitement. He waved his little pen around, the one that lights up when it encounters a current, and exclaimed that every one of our metallic surfaces on the property was live. Well, we knew that. The studio, the barn, the gallery, the workshop and the house. All live. So much drama in one day for him! Anyway, he's worked out where the problem is, that part is switched off, his son is going to come and fix it, and we can walk around barefoot again. Job done!

The first sock on two circulars has been finished. It fits perfectly, and I tried - for the first time - to kitchener stitch the toe. It is certainly neater than my usual sock toe bind-off, but looks a little like a discrete row of half-hearted garter stitch. The next one I am going to get right, and if it looks too different I'll tink the first.

I've also launched what will be an occasional blog version in German, link on the right. It's quite fun writing in German for real again. After a couple of decades, I might say, so the grammar may leave a little to be desired from time to time.

AND... I've been approached to do another book, this time from an entirely different publisher (MQ Publications) on core stability. So much news in one day, I feel a glass of wine coming on.

Jean Frost Jackets

The more I read through this book, the better it becomes. Of the 21 patterns for jackets and shaped cardigans, there are none I would not want to own - even with my 40" hips. Even the two lacy ones are really elegant. The shaping is the key to a tailored look, and this combined with the textures and colour patterns (slip stitches, not fairisle or intarsia) makes a superb look. These jackets have sharp stying and are classy enough to stand the test of time. Stash won't do for my first one of these - I'm going to have to splash out.
