21st May 2003 evening
Help!!! Slight domestic problem here: I, padding around socked feet as I do, have been getting quite substantial electric shocks off my kitchen taps since yesterday evening. Nobody else was, until my middle son James approached the cooker with no shoes on. Husband then did some tests without shoes... wham! Son Chris has established that there is a difference of 140 volts between taps / oven / toaster / etc. and ground, AND voltage difference of 90+ volts between earthing rod outside house and ground. Should not be! Calling electrical genii for any ideas as to what may be happening. The house is 17th century, and the wiring may be only slightly later...

This is really fast! I got some knitting time waiting for Toz to do her German listening exam yesterday and zoomed a couple of inches down the ankle before being swept off up to the staffroom to see a new baby and annoy my former colleagues by looking so well and rested [grin wickedly]. I dallied briefly with the idea of a quick baby-knit... but abandoned it. Been there, done that, don't want to get embroiled again for at least another ten years.

Toz bounced out of her exam, elated, and immediately claimed the sock... colours can't be that bad after all!

Jamtart is eying me strangely, as if she knows that I am taking part in the mouse-along with Wendy. Happy days!

Wahoo! Have started new pair of socks (for me) with two addis. It's really weird having to adjust to the resting needle just sitting there. Depending on how you hold the other, the resting one flicks up in your face, or does little pirouettes all on its own. In a way, two spare dp needles are easier to deal with, but I never realised that I do so much hopping around with my three little fingers to accomodate dps. I think that's why I'm getting the pirouettes. With circulars you don't do so much. I can see that it will be faster in the end, and the needles (not turbos, but nevertheless very, very nice) feel fantastic.

The yarn I got in a surprise package... it looks better in the photo than in reality! It has red, yellow, blue and... billious brown in short sections. However, it will make a good pair of socks.

The stripy crossover top is coming along nicely. Photos when I get the back done.

19th May 2003
Lovely yarn has arrived from Martina: Regia Cotton (41% new wool, 34% cotton, 25% polyamide, the nylon content). Colours are a bluey/grey/cream mix for jeans, a beigey/cream mix with dark blue flashes and a grey/cream mix with sherbet sweets running through it.

What's even better are two pairs of addi needles, 40cm long (short for socks!). Of course I'm going to have to cast on just to try them.

18th May 2003
Mexico socks finished and being worn at this very moment. Chris posed obligingly for the photo:

17th May 2003
Mexico socks are nearing completion. Of course, having read Knitdad's mention of modifications needing to be remembered for the second sock, I realised that the second Mexico is going to have a slightly different heel from the first. Not that you will be able to see it. Just a slightly different version of partridge's eye. Oh well. I will be able to see which lasts longer. Call it scientific research. I'm not frogging.

Jo at sockhaus subscribes to Tutto for a surprise packet of 6 X 100g of Opal wool every month (!!!) and her May yarn has arrived. See it here. Jo's also the one doing the pullover in Mexico, so I follow her progress with interest.

15th May 2003
That resolution didn't last long, did it? (See last entry). I've ordered some more sock yarn from Martina. All cotton mix in fairly subdued colours.

One of the chaps who planted the spinning seed has these words of wisdom to add:

lamas make pajamas

So that's where they come from. I always wondered. If you're not convinced, ask his children, they've known that since they were old enough to enjoy pajamas, so it must be true!

13th May 2003
Is it the 13th already? I've joined in the Phildar #378 knitalong with Alison at the Blue Blog. Yippee! Haven't asked Toz her opinion, but this one I know she will like. I could always knit it a size larger and adopt it if she doesn't fancy it. But she won't fancy it a size larger anyway... What happened to 'Spice'? I hear you cry. What happened to what? Ah yes, the stripy one. Well, it's coming along slowly. As are the Mexico socks. I shall have a big push to finish them, then *absolutely not* cast on any more socks until at least two other items are finished. Fingers crossed for my willpower. I am sockaddicted, you know.

Jean Frost Jackets

The more I read through this book, the better it becomes. Of the 21 patterns for jackets and shaped cardigans, there are none I would not want to own - even with my 40" hips. Even the two lacy ones are really elegant. The shaping is the key to a tailored look, and this combined with the textures and colour patterns (slip stitches, not fairisle or intarsia) makes a superb look. These jackets have sharp stying and are classy enough to stand the test of time. Stash won't do for my first one of these - I'm going to have to splash out.
