Blueish socks for me

Blankets, blankets, blankets
As in the book by Debbie Abrahams. They look soooooo much fun to knit. Haven't got any babies to knit for, so I'm not sure. Can I do one to sit comfortably in an English country house? Maybe the patterns in different shades of ivory / cream / dusty beige and sage green or gold or dusty pink for highlights. Ye gods, I think I've talked myself into it.

5th December 2002

Did I miss a day?

Went into Brighton yesterday and found myself in Borders (who would have guessed?). There I came across the Winter 02/03 edition of Interweave Knits, and leafed through it idly, not expected very much... Oh my word! I have to knit at least 3 items, starting of course with Jean Moss, going on to Niemeyer and Zangl's color-blocked pullover and then the Kasuri Chanchanko vest. I can't say how many months (years?) have gone by since I have seen classy knits in a magazine.

Have finished one gansey sock and am racing down the ankle on sock 2.

Toz' concert last night was fantastic. The Elgar (Variations) in particular. Second best was the Sibelius Finlandia (which Toz enjoyed playing most) and most demanding and equally enjoyable was the theme music to the Harry Potter films. They are such a talented and hard-working bunch of musicians, and I am *ever so* proud of Toria. She has also had mock GCSEs all week, so is a little hysterical at the mo. Hot chocolate and bedtime, I think, if I can persuade her.

Jamtart has been banished from the top of the monitor, because I think the radiation will do her no good, so she is now parked on my diary / booking book, knowing full well that I do not move without it.

I've just discovered that the Jean Moss jacket is made of Rowan wool-cotton... bliss!!! See below for revised list of works in head.

Jamtart's front paws turn out slightly, as pointed out by middle son who only goes out with dancers, and can recognise a turned out leg at 1000 yards.

3rd December 2002

I've come across the German version of sock knitters group - Sockenstricker - in German of course. They have given me the friendliest welcome I have ever received from a group!! It's all in German, so if you can do the lingo, go and join in. They've got some amazing photos of socks, and each one I looked at had a mini-sock with it.

I'm going to have to commit myself to writing this next book for Pearson - they wanted it in December (!!!!!) but January is more likely, no, February. It's going to be a difficult one. Sighhh.

Yup, I've done it: 11th Feb is the deadline. Ye gods!!! It had better sell well.

Format for book is out of my head and onto the screen. Yes, it is boring. Darn! But I have my gansey socks at hand and do another round whenever I cannot stand any more.

2nd December 2002
Oh YES!!! the gansey yarn sock is coming along nicely, quite stiff in the spine stitch bit around the ankle, and very pleasing along the woven (mock) rib heel, which I shall continue along the sole. I've turned the heel and am decreasing for the gusset; spine stitch and woven rib are all bevaving themselves. As expected, this yarn shows up the pattern beautifully, so major muff-ups will be seen!! I'll let you know :)

Toria has gone off with Daddy to Tunbridge Wells for the Primary Schools area Christmas Concert at the Assembly Halls. They do one in Eastbourne, one in Brighton and one at TW. The South Downs Youth Orchester plays whatever it's playing at the time and the little ones sing their hearts out afterwards. We've been doing this since the boys were little, then Toria joined one of the orchesters and accompanied, and this is her first year with the 'pros'. Daddy got one of the last two (2!) tickets on the door, when he delivered her for rehearsal (with 2 1/2 hours to kick around until it starts!). We are not terribly good at organising ourselves. Wednesday is the Brighton gig at the Brighton Centre, which is eeeeenormous, so should be impressive, and it's my turn. I'm looking forward to it. I shall drop her off, then head to a Borders and knit in the café until it's time. Anyone care to join me?

1st December 2002
Is it midnight already?

That's it! Daisy has got so tedious, I'm going to have to start some socks to keep myself going. Self-discipline wears many different faces.

Hallooooo? Is anyone out there? It's December and dark outside. We don't do Thanksgiving over here and I'm feeling a little ... odd ...

Take inspiration from this amazing array of socks by Katherine DeMoure-Aldrich at Summerwings. This woman is amazing! Many socks are her own design, several adapted from commercial patterns. The first few socks are from patterns at Socknitters.com, which is where I found this free sock pattern for 4ply double. Would make a very snug ankle for boot wear.

I'm delighted to introduce a German blog Der kleine Sockhaus by, I think, Jo. Auf deutsch, natürlich. Mit einem Strick-Tagebuch. Diese Dame strickt ganz tolle Socken!

OK, so I've started the gansey yarn socks again. 2.75mm needles, spine stitch for the ankle, to be continued over the top of the foot. woven rib for the heel and sole and toes. Works out quite thick and dense, which will be good as I wear my socks as outerwear very often, i.e. in the clinic, or teaching Lotte Berk / Pilates. I only had to rip them down once (too snug) and am well away now. Breathe sigh of relief. This will get the Daisy sweater going again :)

You're right. My comments thing doesn't work. Shall investigate. Ah yes. Had something to do with keyword.

Middle son has enquired gently whether cat (on monitor) doesn't think I am shouting at her when I have a fit at the computer. Of course not. She sleeps straight through it. However, I am reminded that not all has gone well this evening, most of it my fault. Superb son suggested aromatherapy bath foam to act as 'chill' agent. Told him to get some sorted out for me and run said bath. Given that he is expert at unchilling me when the fancy takes him, I think he's turning out quite well.
