Springtime!
I love Easter! I always associate this time of the year with Spring sprouting, sunshine, daffodils and tulips, plenty of cut flowers in the house, lighter evenings, bringing projects that I've been working on over the winter to the realisation phase - and not least... a few days off!
I was in Brighton on Thursday evening with D and K, her partner, to see a play that their (grown up) youngster was starring in and the place was buzzing gloriously. Pubs and bars spilling out onto pavements, Brighton people, always colourful, owning the place as only Brighton people know how, gearing up for four whole days off. So, I was able to indulge a swell of love for Springtime and Brighton at the same time. There is a wonderful creative energy about the place which attracts people with creative energy...
It was K's birthday over the weekend and I found her 500g of rather lovely onyx unbrushed mohair (Brown Sheep Company? Is that what they call themselves?) and 300g Australian alpaca in bluebell / lavender. This with the undisguised agenda of luring her back into knitting - she is a lapsed devotee of yarn things. In the 80s and 90s she used to knit Rowan and Kaffe Fassett sweaters and coats, but got discouraged by variable tension and subsequently oddly shaped garments which were not worn. I think scarves and shawls may offer a slippery slope back in.
Never mind lapsed devotees, what about my own knitting?
Well, I've bought a yarn swift. This has enormous implications for me. Firstly I had to accept that it just isn't that comfortable any more for me to hold the skein around my feet as I wind it into balls. Really. It took me several years to admit this, denial reigning supreme until I realised I had about 300 skeins of yarn unwound in my stash. Secondly, those 300 or so skeins (I exagerate, slightly), are now becoming usable balls of yarn, and I just have to play.
The first little gem to emerge is some blackberry and lime 4 ply wool, which is being coaxed into a narrow scarf with a crisp garter stitch and lace pattern to show off the colours. I used Ivy Bigelow's 'Midwest Moonlight' from Pam Allen's Scarf Style, sized down to 4 ply (fingering) and 3.25mm needles, lopped off one of the three pattern repeats for a 6 1/2" wide scarf with enough yarn for about 54" length.

The nutmeg alpaca shawl isn't looking too bad, is it?
