Ver neat, cunning, simple. Techniques for some very subtle sophisticated fabric design. Many of the projects in finer yarns, kits available. I'm into the wing shawls and the Nihon Japanese Kimono.

Poems of Color, Knitting in the Bohus Tradition - Wendy Keele
A beautiful history of this Swedish organisation which includes sumptuous picis and not a few patterns and charts. Personally, I would ignore the patterns and adapt the charts, but the shaping of the garments is good enough to follow to the letter. Colours are stunning and the patterns complex, with the use of purling in the fairisle for texture.

Viking Patterns for Knitting: Inspiration and Projects for Today's Knitter
- Elizabeth Lavold
Very good, detailed exposition of techniques required for knitting cables effectively. EL does go on about how she thinks she invented some of the stitches. Obviously she never knitted any of Patricia Roberts' designs. All her techniques were familiar to me from various other sources. Nevertheless this is an excellent technical book full of good information.

Traditional Fair Isle Knitting
- Alice Starmore
I've used this book over and over again for children's fairisles (and all mine are grown up now! this is a reprint of a golden oldie). Use the individual motifs for designing your own knitwear. (You really need to know how to design your own knitwear. There are no ready-made patterns). The historical detail is fascinating.
