How to Knit - Debby Bliss
This still seems to be the best book for beginners - you CAN learn how to knit using this one, without the help of a tutor.

The Knitting Experience Book 1: the Knit Stitch -
Sally Melville
The first in a series starting with garter stitich. The Knitters across the pond are raving about it, talking about "charming, clever designs", "classic, modern, hip" and "great sense of style". Absolute beginners and seasoned knitters are smitten!
More than that, it does explain the basic how-tos very clearly and simply. As Sally restricts herself to garter stitch (the simplest knitting stitch - no frills!) there is less to confuse. If you make a couple of the designs from the book you will be well on your way to figuring out more complex techniques, and probably hooked on knitting in the process.

The Knitting Experience Book 2: the Purl Stitch -
Sally Melville
The second in this series, introducing the purl stitch. Fantastic designs again, not just for beginners, although beginners can tackle all of them with confidence.

Knitting in Plain English - Maggie Righetti
An excellent book for introducing the not-brand-new knitter to the technical and design aspects of the knitting process. You need to have some experience of knitting and following patterns to get the most out of this book, but if you are keen to learn about the whys and wherefores of the knitting process, this is for you. The style is chatty and anecdotal, full of cunning hints and tips about assessing the merits of a design or pattern before you knit it, and makes for an allround good read. There are patterns included to support the learning process, but these are restricted to baby clothes and shawls or scarves. Click on the amazon.com link below and follow the links to look at the table of contents.

Vogue Knitting: The Ultimate Knitting Book
An extensive textbook on all aspects of knitting. I don't own this book, but I am assured it is a winner with nearly-new to seasoned knitters.
